Ohi peoples~ It’s been a very long journey through the exams, and now its finally time to return to blogging~ I’ll be introducing Kyousogiga today. It’s an interesting but not very well known OVA, but I do hope everybody will watch it!
Note: Potential spoilers ahead~ Post continued after the break.
Story setting/summary:
Kyousogiga is set in Kyoto, Japan, in a universe where demons, gods and humans coexist. The story revoles around a young girl, Koto, who ventured into this world unknowingly and wishes to return home. With her brothers A and Un by her side they search for an atypical black rabbit, believed to be able to grant wishes, in order to return home. In time they learnt that the black rabbit could be Lady Koto (not to be confused with the main character) who is a divine figure worshiped by many. Lady Koto once lived in Kyoto but left a long time ago and was unheard of since. Her 3 children, each representative of a race and who possess unique abilities, wish to see their mother again. With reasons to believe that Koto has relations with Lady Koto, not just merely bearing semblance in name, they are in pursuit of Koto. Eventually, on Lady Koto’s birthday, Koto was caught and she herself has to find an answer amidst the chaos in order to find her road back.
Character intro:

Koto (Rie Kugumiya) - The protagonist of this anime. Desperate to look for a way home, she stole a hammer that can change its size at Koto's will to fend off enemies.

Yase (Eri Kitamura) - One of the children of Lady Koto. Representative of demons, she has an army of them under her command. She is an ojou-san and uses her demons as her butlers.

Kuruma (Shigeru Nakamura) - One of the children of Lady Koto. Representative of the gods, he is able to command them. He is the priest of a temple.

Myoe (Kenichi Suzumura) - One of the children of Lady Koto. Representative of humans. He appears to be a monk and has close relations with Koto and her brothers, almost as if he was their guardian.
Despite being in the same family, these 3 siblings loves to quarrel and would not hold back to spark fights with each other. All of them are capable fighters. Together, they are the Family of 3.

Professor Shoko (Chiwa Saito) - Although she appeared in the OVA, I have absolutely no idea about her contribution to the plot. She seems to live together with Kuruma though.
*Feel free to correct me if any of the information above is incorrect, as I could have overlooked things here and there given that the OVA was rather messy. Also, for all those who have already watched this OVA, do share your opinions regarding Professor Shouko~ I can’t decipher her identity, her purpose or even the room she appeared in.
Personal opinions:
Ohoho~ The style of the animation is highly unique; it most closely resembles Summer Wars in terms of style and chaos. It was particularly appealing as it is completely different from most anime one would usually watch; the whimsical yet turbulent style of the OVA is like Alice in Wonderland brought to a higher level, while the festival-like atmosphere bears similarity with Spirited Away – albeit being very colorful, it has its darkness that is embedded within it.
The show also has symbolic meanings here and there. The OVA started out by asking “What is life, but a dream?”, and the out of this world, dreamlike animation builds up on that statement. There are many other metaphors presented along the way that will require you to watch the OVA more than once to uncover, and that is one joy I found in this OVA.
Overall, the soundtrack, the animation, the plot and the character designs are awesome, and I hope there will be a sequel that will explain more about the background as the OVA was a bit rushed. This was probably due to the fact that they had to cram a lot of content into 25 minutes. I also would like to see how the ending turned out, since, well… Okay, I can’t reveal it here, so you’ll have to watch to find out
I give this OVA a 10/10~ The OVA got me glued to my seat for that 25 minutes, and not many anime nowadays can get me to do that. It’s definitely worth watching, so do make sure you give this a chance~ If you are looking for other news, you may check out their website here.
(PS: If you like this, you will definitely like Mawaru Penguindrum, and vice versa.)
