First Impressions: Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko.

That shirt is so cute.

Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko (a.k.a. Henneko) is one of my most anticipated anime for the spring season, perhaps entirely because the original character art design is done by Kantoku. The first episode turned out to be quite a pleasant watch, and the series appears to be a comedic, lighthearted take on why you should always be careful of what you wish for.

My Thoughts:

Giving away any part of yourself is something one should really think through, because with that personality or trait missing, you’re no longer yourself and in a sense “incomplete”. Unfortunately, many of us tend to think (and act) way too rashly and have a tendency look at ourselves way too critically at times; needless to say, wishing that a certain “undesirable” part of us was gone (without thinking of further repercussions) is probably something most of us have experienced at some point in our lives. That we should think twice seems to be what this anime is driving at, in a less serious manner of course.

Leaving that aside, thus far Tsukiko is definitely my favourite character. From the moment she appeared up till when she wished to the stony cat, I was filled with what I think was moe overload. That Kantoku art matched with that amazing, expressive voice acting by Ogura Yui really can kill.

Also, the stony cat seems to have grown much fatter (and started smiling) after Youto and Tsukiko made their wishes. Does it mean that it feeds on wishes, or is there something more insidious behind the scenes?

Now for a hypothesis on my part: considering that Youto’s “PR skills” was transferred to Azusa and that we haven’t seen who Tsukiko’s ability to express emotions went to, I wonder if it might just be that her ability went to the stony cat itself, which was why it was able to smile.

I added some captions to each screenshot, so if you click on them you can read my commentary.

I really enjoyed the first episode of Henneko. I hope JC Staff keeps this up!

Man, I really loved this first episode. It has such a different feel from the manga! I knew that right at the first minute when Youto made that epic superfast bow that even created wind pressure XD

Also… am I the only one who likes Tsukiko’s poker face? ^^

according to the manga it will take a lot of time for that to happen. And yes. I somewhat like her emotionless face for reasons that I do not know. Perhaps because she makes me remember of Nagato Yuki from Suzumiya Haruhi’s Melancholy.

Nice review! Will you also do one for the second episode?
It definitely started to uncover some “uglies”, and I cannot wait to see the full length of it as well as the resolution.

I took it that her ability to express emotion was transferred to the Stony Cat itself. I figured that is why she is helping him recover his facade, but not requesting his help in return so much. She knows who has her expressiveness and doesn’t see a way to get it back.

I could be wrong… I just watched the first two eps of this last night and I have to say it was a ton of fun! Better than I expected.
